The Phantom Band

If you've followed The Phantom Band throughout their career to-date then you'll know two things of the Glaswegian six-piece: feast often follows famine, and you should never accept them merely at face value.

Just as two wildly singular, diverse albums in Checkmate Savage and The Wants sprung up one after another between 2009 and 2010, before a period of quiet (solo projects notwithstanding).

So the group's more direct third record released in June 2014 - Strange Friend - more art-rock than rock-art - comes followed by seven tracks cut largely from the same recording sessions at Chem 19 in Blantyre, in the form of Fears Trending.

Set for release on Chemikal Underground (26.01.15), The Phantom Band play The Duchess as part of their headline UK tour.

"This is the Phantom Band in direct mode, and it suits them... Psychedelic Outdoors Rock? This genre well hike and hike." 4/5 Mojo

"Strange Friend marks a measured step towards accessibility for one of Britain's most innovative bands." 8/10 Uncut

"There's an exception to any rule, and in this case it's The Phantom Band" 9/10 Drowned In Sound

"The world they inhabit is strange and congenial and often beautiful" Album of the Month, The List

"At it's best it's irresistible" Q

"2009's 'Checkmate Savage' and 2011's 'The Wants' pulled together elements as diverse as krautrock, campfire sing-songs and pure, pulsing pop. 'Strange Friend is all this and more." 8/10 NME

"Charming and impressive" Loud & Quiet

"Strange Friend is their most refined and coherent album to date." The Skinny

"They still resist easy classification. Something about their fuzzily strident robofunk recalls the Beta Band, but there's an urgency that underpins every song that - along with Anthony's distinctive baritone - makes the Phantom Band sound tougher and rangier." The Guardian
