6 Ways To Break A Bird - Reading Fringe Festival

24/07/2016

About this Event

A poet and a parrot make sense of their fears.

There’s a bird in your hand. It’s tiny, delicate face peering up at you with love. It trusts you. And you’re stood before a man in a white coat with a pair of scissors, offering to clip its wings. He’s trying to explain that it’ll be better for your relationship with the bird, that it will be more dependent and easier to train. And you look at this tiny thing and you try to think where you’ve heard these words spoken before?

Six Ways To Break A Bird is Becci Louise’s two fingers in the face of a culture that defines us by our failures to conform rather than our willingness to express. More than that, it is the story of a relationship between a bird who thinks he’s a person and a girl who could be a bird. Here are two misfits, finding flock and family in each other. This is a celebration of the human body and soul as a machine, as a ship, as a refuge; not as a holding cell.
