Bath Welcomes Refugees (BWR) is an organisation made up entirely of volunteers. Its goals are simple, i.e. to do all within its powers to bring people fleeing danger and oppression to sanctuary. In particular, BWR aims to ensure that any refugee who makes Bath their final destination finds support while they settle and become familiar with our language and our ways. The organisation is a-political and a-religious – anyone is welcome to join if they have the heart to help us achieve those goals.

Several Syrian families have already arrived in Bath, resettled by the UK Government as part of the Syrian Vulnerable Persons Relocation Scheme in collaboration with the UNHCR. The families fled their homes when life became too dangerous for them in Syria. All the families settled here have young children.

Mindful of the role of official agencies, BWR has worked to support the work that BANES does for the families. On of our first tasks was to provide Welcome Packs for the families as they arrived in Bath. And we have gone on to provide garden tools and help with gardening, run social events and picnics, provide bicycles, create language groups, be available for hospital appointments, and generally be a spare pair of hands when needed. It has been busy but it has been good.

Currently we are looking to step up our efforts to help those people stuck in Europe, as well as how we can support BANES in accommodating Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children when they arrive in our area. Finally, we are working to raise funds, find a property and furnish the group with all the necessary skills and know-how to become Community Sponsors.
