Skerryvore The Live Forever Tour - Thekla - 19.11.17

19/11/2017

About this Event

Skerryvore

Skerryvore entered 2017 having, once again, been recognised as the ‘Live Act of the Year 2016’ at the Scottish Traditional Music Awards, an award they previously won in 2011.

The band - Tiree brothers Daniel Gillespie (accordion) and Martin Gillespie (whistles & accordion), Fraser West (drums & vocals), Alec Dalglish (lead vocals & guitar), Craig Espie (fiddles), Alan Scobie (keyboards) and Jodie Bremaneson (bass) and recent addition Scott Wood (bagpipes) – tour extensively, not only throughout Scotland and the Rest of the UK, but also worldwide. The 2015 ‘Decade World Tour’ was launched with a sell-out 6000 capacity concert at Mossfield Stadium, Oban and then took in Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Denmark and USA, as well as UK gigs stretching from Shetland to the South of England. Skerryvore returned to USA in August 2016 for a 7 week, coast to coast tour – their longest yet!

All members bring their own musical style to the Skerryvore mix. The more they have experimented with this mix, the more the band and their signature sound has evolved. This is evident in the progression across the 6 albums released since 2005:

West Coast Life (2005)

On the Road (2007)

Skerryvore (2010) – SNMA Record of the year 2011

World of Chances (2012)

Chasing the Sun (2014)

‘This is their most complete and mature album to date…’ (Phil Brown, BBC Radio Lancashire)

‘The sound of Young Scots Power Folk.’ (Mark Radcliff, BBC Radio 2)

‘Chasing The Sun is a brilliantly realised, polished and accessible piece of work.’ (Rob Fearnley, FATEA Magazine Website)

…and in 2015 ‘Decade,’ a mix of live recordings, live studio sessions and a single ‘Happy to be Home’ featuring Sharon Shannon.

‘All in all a cracking album…giving a fair cross section of their past triumphs – and pointing us all in the direction where they are focussed on hurtling.’ (Grem Devlin, Living Tradition Magazine)

‘The album includes the single ‘Happy to be Home’ which…is the stand-out track on a magnificent album.’ (Graham Hobbs, Shire Folk)

‘This life enhancing celebration of the first ten years in Skerryvore's eclectic musical journey serves up an invigorating blend of new studio recordings and live tracks …and newcomers to their feel good fusion of rock, pop and traditional music would be well advised to lend an ear.’ (Keith Bryan’s Record Reviews.)

When not touring the different corners of the globe, the band can still be found performing relentlessly, contributing to projects by Live Music Now (LMN), The Royal Blind School, Artlink Central and HMP Cornton Vale, as well as special needs and mainstream schools throughout the UK. They also featured in a recent VisitScotland TV commercial aimed at international audiences.

Following on from the 6000 sell out success of their 2015 ‘Decade’ event, ‘Skerryvore’s Oban Live’ launched as a two day event in May 2016, and returns on 2nd/3rd June 2017, with a new album to follow in summer 2017.
