WE LOVE FRIDAYS PRESENTS JAGUAR SKILLS - FRIDAY 13TH DECEMBER 2013
About this Event
WE LOVE PRESENTS JAGUAR SKILLS!
The rise and rise of Jaguar Skills has been well documented. Honing his craft and love of music for the last 15 years Jag has remained true to his school and kept a mysterious edge to his character; with details of his real name, age and home town etc left largely unconfirmed…
Using his Japanese contacts, Jaguar Skills first gained recognition by producing a mixtape CD for fashion label Maharishi. The 60 minute CD was created, looped, produced and cut entirely on 2 mini walkmen. It was the first of its kind and received top reviews in key publications and also pushed his signature sound of lightning speed mixing.
The next few years saw Jag build his DJ profile, playing at various venues across London and it wasn’t long before he caught the ears of fashionista Jade Jagger, who invited Jaguar Skills to become a resident at her world famous global Jezebel parties, playing gigs from Ibiza to Russia and Hong Kong.
Following a quick production for US mega rapper Lupe Fiasco called ‘We Love You’, Jag put out a mixtape that would send him his profile into the stratosphere:
“1979-2006: A Hip-Hop Odyssey – 800 Tracks In 45 Minutes”. A never been done before project, he mixed every Hip-Hop hit from 1979 to 2006, and played them in order of their release, starting from the earliest to the most recent. It naturally caused an internet storm through its original idea and skillful mixing.
After one month on the net this monstrous mix had been downloaded over a MILLION times. It was also played twice in a row on Mistajam’s BBC 1xtra show, and Radio 1 star Colin Murray split the mix up, and played a part of it every week on his show for a staggering 10 weeks.
On top of the weekly 10 Minute Mash Up Mix for the Trevor Nelson Show the original ninja also has a quarterly ‘In New DJs we Trust’ slot on BBC Radio 1! Jag’s ’30 years of Hip Hop’ mix proved its already timeless quality as it formed an integral part of Radio 1′s Hip-Hop celebrations. The love from the Radio 1 camp continued as Jag completed his ‘Gaming Mix’ which saw him mix retro game tunes with works of some of the biggest recording artists in the world to create a unique musical experience.
When not at gigs, Jag is pretty much locked in his top secret ninja studio producing a constant stream of mixes. Notably highlights include his ‘History of DnB mix’ and also a ‘History of Ayia Napa’ Mix on BBC Radio 1. This musical output led to Island Records requesting a mix for their priority artist Devlin, being commissioned to remix and produce the Renault Clio advert soundtrack, and also receiving the Gold Award 2010 @ New York Radio Awards for his BBC World Cup Mix!
2011 was a mammoth year for Jaguar Skills as it saw him embark on not one but two sold-out UK tours. Both the ‘Revenge of the Ninja Tour’ and the ‘HoooOOO! Winter Tour’ saw the masked DJ take his impressive live set to a string of larger capacity venues, dazzling audiences of three to four times the size of previous year’s gigs with his lightning speed mixing.
Sandwiched between these sold-out tours was a hectic summer schedule where Jag played high profile slots across the UK festival circuit, in addition to a European tour for Global Gathering taking in Ukraine, St Petersburg, Belarus, notable gigs in Ibiza at Come Together and Ibiza Rocks as well as returning to his native Japan with dates in Tokyo and Osaka.
In March Jag also made a swift ninja jump into retail. Launching an exclusive Ninja Tee and CD combo in 22 Urban Outfitters stores, fans of the original ninja were able to pick a little piece of Jaguar Skills in stores across the UK and Europe. Last year Jag was also commissioned by drinks brand Carling to create an original production. He had to produce a track made from a set of natural sound samples of summer for the ‘Carling Zest’ online campaign.
2011 continued to be a landmark year for Jaguar Skills as it saw him release his first major compilation album on Toolroom Records. The ‘Toolroom Knights Mixed by Jaguar Skills’ CD, received widespread critical acclaim and cemented his place as ‘King of the Mash-ups’. To round-off a fantastic year, Jaguar Skills was featured in The Red Pages ‘Top 100 people to watch in 2012’ and was also given the accolade of being asked to produce a series of one-off mixes for Radio 1 to celebrate 25 years of Pete Tong and the Essential Selection.
2012 has seen Jaguar Skills continue his fine form with a sold-out UK spring tour already under his belt, as well high profile gigs down-under at venues such as Chinese Laundry in Sydney Australia, and an extensive USA tour, playing prestigious festivals such as Electric Daisy Carnival in New York, I Love the City in San Diego and Nocturnal Wonderland in Texas.
Once again the masked ninja is gearing up for another huge summer. In the pipe-line is his second compilation this time for Ministry of Sound. This is coupled with another busy summer of touring the world’s biggest and best festivals such as Wireless, Lovebox and Creamfields. Notably Jaguar Skills is joint headlining Reading and Leeds dance stages this summer and continuing his long-standing relationship with Bestival. This year Rob da Bank has invited the original ninja back for an unprecedented take-over of the Bollywood tent, where Jag has free reign to curate the line-up.
Make sure you stay locked in with the rest of the Jaguar Skills army to hear an impending aural assault of every tempo; from house to drum n bass, and everything in-between.
