Perfectionism and Homesickness Talks

29/11/2017

About this Event

As a part of Jess, your VP Support's 'Let's Talk: Wellbeing' week, there are two talks taking place on Wednesday 29th November. One about perfectionism, and one about homesickness.

Perfectionism – 11am-12pm

Perfectionism has many different forms and can effect different areas of an individual's life. Gurjeet Bansal from the Centre of Psychology explores how perfectionism is relative to university life. Examples include, students who can procrastinate because their assignments must be "perfect", or students that may struggle to look "perfect" in order to fit in or make friends. Such students can have unrelenting high expectations of themselves and others. This talk explores the meaning of perfectionism, how it can effect individuals and how it could be better managed using cognitive behavioural therapy.

Homesickness – 12pm – 1pm

Research shows that up to 70% of students who move from their home location will experience the phenomenon labelled 'homesickness' in their early days at a university. The initial excitement at being in a new environment can quickly be replaced with thoughts about not knowing 'who I am here'. The emotional sequelae are often related to the impact of being physically separated from loved ones who are still at 'home'. An inability to re-establish a functional social network can also exacerbate the situation. A devastating effect of homesickness is an increased motivation to leave university and return home. Thankfully the degree to which homesickness is experienced can be mitigated.

In John Newland’s talk, the emphasis is on developing an understanding of homesickness that allows for practical steps to be taken to reduce the impact on the motivation to leave university.
